European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)

Elsevier and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) opens in new tab/window have entered into an agreement to enable researchers employed by ECDC to comply with the ECDC’s open access policy opens in new tab/window when publishing in Elsevier journals.

Agreement

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has an "Internal Policy on open access opens in new tab/window publication of scientific content, including articles submitted to peer review journals."

The policy requires scientific articles produced by ECDC employees during their official duties, and who are listed as first or last authors (hereafter “authors”) to publish their articles via the gold open access route. ECDC authors can comply with ECDC’s open access policy by choosing the gold open access option when publishing an article with Elsevier.

Authors will retain the option to choose to publish their article under the subscription model and make it available via green open access. They should be aware, however, that this will not be compliant with ECDC’s open access policy.

Gold open access

Elsevier provides open access (OA) publishing options which enable authors to comply with ECDC’s policy. Specifically, authors can choose to publish their article in one of over 250 open access journals or in one of over 1,900 established journals with an open access option. This includes the option to publish gold open access in The Lancet and Cell Press.

A publication fee must be paid to publish an article gold open access. Elsevier's open access publication fees are journal specific. Specific pricing information can be found on the journal homepage and our APC price list opens in new tab/window.

ECDC will cover the costs of APCs to secure open access publication for ECDC authors. Elsevier will invoice ECDC directly to facilitate this. Elsevier will also enable authors to identify themselves as ECDC staff via Elsevier's funding body form to simplify the process.

Elsevier provides authors with a choice of reuse licenses. ECDC recommends that their authors use the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license.

Upon publication, Elsevier will:

  • Provide immediate and permanent free access to the final published article on ScienceDirect

  • Send to Europe PubMed Central (Europe PMC) the final published journal article (PJA) as it appears on ScienceDirect

    • PMC and PMC mirror sites will also link directly to this same article on Elsevier's websites

Green open access

ECDC’s open access policy does not support green open access. While ECDC authors will retain the option to choose to publish their article under the subscription model and make it available green open access, authors will need to be aware that this is not a compliant option for their funder.
